Transports

Transportation industry includes internal and international transit, carriage and shipment of cargos and passengers by roads, railways, air and water routes.

Transportation is one of the most developing business areas in the region. For more than a decade it is constantly developing as contacts with Western and Eastern countries are intensifying, internal demand is increasing and new markets are conquered. Convenient geographical position of the Baltic States and the nearby Baltic Sea has positive influence to rapid development of transportation services, therefore a big part of cargos transported are transit cargos.

Joining of Baltic States the EU made a new stimulus for this area: number of passengers carried by air transport has increased rapidly. Especially successful is area of cargo transportation by trucks. Baltic carrier-transport companies are one of the strongest in the region and successfully compete with companies from other countries. Cargo handling in Klaipėda, Rīga, Tallinn, Ventspils, Liepoja and Būtingė seaports is increasing, but they have to compete with Russian ports. Difficulties in the transportation services arise because of intense competition, especially with foreign enterprises and various restrictions.

In the future this area should develop rapidly. New markets should be conquered, new transportation projects should be created.

Some of the biggest and most important companies in this area are:

  • Railway companies Lietuvos geležinkeliai (Lithuania), Latvijas dzelzceļš (Latvia), Eesti Raudtee (Estonia);
  • Air companies Lietuvos avialinijos (Lithuania), Air Baltic (Latvia), Estonian Air;
  • Sea transportation companies LISCO Baltic Service (Lithuania), Latvijas Kugnieciba (LASCO) (Latvia), Tallink (Estonia);
  • Car trade companies Silberauto (Lithuania, Estonia), Toyota Baltic, Kommest Auto (Estonia), Mūsa Motors (Latvia), Sostena (Lithuania), Amserv Grupi (Estonia);
  • Cargo transportation and forwarding companies DFDS Transport, Kaminera, Girtoka, Transekspedicija (Lithuania), Alpa Centrums, Baltic Transshipment Center, Lattransrail, LSF Trans (Latvia)

Experience

Our Baltic Legal Solutions team has extensive competence in transportation, transit and infrastructure transactions, particularly in the aviation, railway and shipping sectors. Our legal network’s transportation sector client base includes local public corporations to international and global players. The sector has become especially active after EU accession of three Baltic States when the region’s geographical position and taxation system became the key attraction factors for many new investors from east and west.
